TRI’s History
Developed at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill almost twenty years ago, TRI has worked with hundreds of teachers across the country to help grow strong readers. Studied in a series of randomized controlled trials, TRI has positive impacts on alphabetics, comprehension, and fluency.
TRI was developed at UNC-Chapel Hill to support classroom teachers and students in rural schools. A pioneer in virtual coaching, TRI discovered that teachers preferred remote coaching over in-person coaching visits (Vernon-Feagans et al., 2013). TRI has been the subject of multiple randomized controlled trials, with positive impacts on alphabetics, comprehension, and fluency. TRI has a Strong rating on Evidence for ESSA and has been the subject of a 2017 What Works Clearinghouse single study review.
We are a member of ProvenTutoring.org
TRI is a proud member of ProvenTutoring.org. Proven Tutoring supports the use of evidence-based tutoring programs across the US. Recognizing the positive impacts of high-impact tutoring, we have adapted the TRI model to work within a tutoring framework. TRI tutors implement TRI one-on-one with a series of students throughout the school day for 8-10 weeks using either our new digital format or our traditional method.
